This dik-dik is rendered in Jean Cate's characteristic style of mottled cloudiness. A quiet guardian, overlooking from atop his shelf, and one of several drawing models in the shop menagerie. The graphite body of the animal seems to have light upon it, it could be under an acacia tree, in a small pool of dappled shade, looking for leaves, keeping ears alert for predators; but it is an unnatural light, this dappling of graphite, and does not occur from any shape of leaf under any kind of tree. The picture of this small species of antelope is as much a picture of an animal as that of the materiality of graphite and the ways in which it can blur and take form and figure.

18" x 24" giclée print on Fine German Etching Paper 310gsm / 18 mil by Hahnmühle with torn edges, edition of 80 signed and numbered. Printed in Chicago.
