This diptych of paintings by Jean Cate are made with watercolor on birch wood panels. The vibrancy of the red is often the first impression given by these paintings, but then the softness of the red follows. Washes of watercolor mingle with the grain of wood in gradients of cream, flesh, rose and saturated clean red.
