From a distance this watercolor by Jean Cate simplifies into three sections of color: blue, lavender and dim teal. It's only after stepping closer to this small painting that the colors break into a landscape. A soft hazy landscape nonetheless, where the lake looks smooth and a band of stratus clouds break open to a row of bright cumulus towers. This clarity lasts less than an inch, as the brightness is shadowed by an overwhelming hazy density.
