Semiprecious Silverpoint Stills: Series VII Vegetables - Potatoes
Jean Cate uses the traditional drawing technique of silverpoint to render these delicate still life depictions of vegetables in this series. A type of metalpoint used by scribes, artists, and craftspeople since ancient times, the silverpoint mark-making process involves dragging a silver wire or rod across a surface prepped with gesso. In Cate’s intricate drawing of potatoes, she focuses on the shapes and shadows of the potatoes with incredible detail while leaving ample negative space in the composition.
