Join artist Jean Cate for “Look Closer” a cloudscape and botanical watercolor workshop at Ghost Ranch in Abiquiú, New Mexico.

Dive into the world of watercolors as Jean guides you through an exploration of local botanicals, natural ephemera, and skyscapes. Inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s philosophy of “looking closely”, we will study our subjects closely before creating our portraits.

During this weekend watercolor retreat, we will explore natural foliage, examine watercolor styles and techniques, discuss color theory, paint swatch, study composition, practice presence and intuitive painting, paint landscapes and cloudscapes, and create both structured and loose portraits. Jean will guide you through painting demonstrations with hands-on assistance in group settings, while also making time for solo painting. We will alternate between painting in the studio and outdoors.

Prior art experience is not necessary, anyone is welcome to join the class. This weekend course is a mix of skill-building, inspiration, creative exploration, and a supportive, educational atmosphere.
