Join us on Saturday, October 3rd from 10am-11:30am in the Martha Mae studio for a collaborative workshop with Volition Tea.
Oolong is one of tea's most diverse categories - capable of expressing everything from bright florals to deep notes of roasted fruit, spice, and caramel. In this intimate guided tasting, we'll explore that remarkable spectrum through two exceptional teas: Golden TGY, a lightly roasted oolong with a vibrant floral character, and First Blush, a high-temperature roasted oolong that reveals warmth, depth, and remarkable complexity. Together, they offer a window into how craftsmanship transforms the same broad tea category into entirely different sensory experiences.
Rather than simply tasting tea, you'll engage all of your senses. We'll observe the dry leaves, breathe in evolving aromas, listen to the sound of water meeting the leaves, and experience how flavor, texture, and fragrance shift across multiple infusions prepared in the traditional gongfu style. With only ten guests, the workshop is designed to encourage curiosity, conversation, and a slower way of paying attention.
Each guest will leave with a tube of their favorite oolong from the tasting to continue the experience at home, along with the J.Studios cup used throughout the workshop - a keepsake of a morning spent discovering the extraordinary range that exists within a single tea category.
Please note that this is an in-person event at the Martha Mae Studio (1727 W Grand Ave, Chicago, IL 60622) on October 3rd from 10am-11:30am, with free street parking available in the neighborhood. The studio is located on the second floor with only stairs available. We can't wait to see you there!
*Tickets are non-refundable, but can be transferred to another guest.

Volition Tea is a Chicago-based tea company sourcing exceptional loose leaf teas from small producers in China and thoughtfully grown herbals from farms in the United States. They believe every great cup begins with the people who cultivate, harvest, and craft it. Through direct relationships and visits to origin, they seek to understand not only how their teas are made, but the stories, traditions, and communities behind them.
Volition's collection celebrates teas with a strong sense of place and craftsmanship rather than standardized flavor profiles. By pairing exceptional tea with the stories of the people who produce it, they hope to foster a deeper appreciation for tea as both a craft and a connection - one that honors the hands behind every harvest and invites a more thoughtful experience with every cup.
Annie Xiang is the founder of Volition Tea, a Chicago-based tea company dedicated to showcasing remarkable single-origin teas through thoughtful sourcing and immersive education. Her work centers on revealing the craftsmanship and people often hidden behind the global tea trade, creating experiences that foster curiosity, connection, and a deeper appreciation for tea. Annie has hosted more than 200 public and private tea tastings and was named by Imbibe Magazine in 2023 as one of 75 people and places helping build a better drinks world.
